Microsoft – Passed the free exam 74-409 Server Virtualization with Windows Server Hyper-V and System Center

03 Jan

As I mentioned earlier, Microsoft is offering free exam vouchers for the new exam “74-409 Server Virtualization with Windows Server Hyper-V and System Center”. For more information, take a look here.

I took the exam today and passed after having studied very hard for over a week (including pulling an all nighter today). I’m happy to have my first certification for the year 2014 already though 🙂

In my opinion the exam contained too many repeating (easy) questions on specific subjects, but there were also some very difficult questions about really specific situations. I personally would’ve preferred more “medium difficulty” questions.

All in all I learned a lot from preparing for the exam and I’m very happy with all the new things Microsoft has added to their new products.

If you are looking to take the exam as well, take a look at my previous post that contains the resources I used for preparation.

Good luck and enjoy. I’ll be going for some well earned sleep now 🙂

    Congratulations on passing the exam.
I’m planning to take the exam in early February.
Did you find the exam had a strong focus on System Center 2012 or more so on Hyper-V?

    Hi,
I’ve passed exam on 2014-01-23 and I want to thank You for your preparation links list.
I’ve found couple of articles on themes, which I had no practice on them. And there were some questions on them.

    Thank You

I passed this exam on 1/29/2014 and agree with your assessment of the types of questions asked. I used the MVA course and the Sybex book on Hyper V 2012

I passed the exam on Monday of this week. Here’s some further info about the format of the exam for those who’ve yet to take it.
    45 questions with 2 hours to complete it but you can reasonably expect to finish sooner than that. A pass mark is 700 but I’m not sure if it’s out of 1000 or more. The result sheet broke down the content to be;
    35-40% configure hyper-v
15-20% config and manage VM HA
35-40% implement a server virtualisation infrastructure
15-20% monitor and maintain a server virtualisation infrastructure

I used the MVA jumpstart and the links listed on this blog to study (thanks again for putting it all up here) as well as building a cluster with a couple of computers and installing SC VMM. I expected the exam to be harder to be honest. I felt I hadn’t covered the material properly and barely looked at the monitor and maintain portion.
There was a reasonable amount of powershell required that was quite specific but generally a process of elimination would narrow down your choices if you were unsure.
Some questions required selecting the correct steps to complete a task and put them in order. A couple, you had to pick the right options in a dialog box. Mostly it was multiple choice where you we’re give a question or scenario and had to pick the correct answer(s) from 4 or 5 options.
I had one question that was purely AD based which was strange.
I’d expect if you’ve done a reasonable amount of preparation and are familiar with clustering in Server 2008 you should be in a good position to pass the exam.

      Hi Rory,
AFIAK, this percentage is default according to themes which questions wrer asked.
The level of knowladge on each theme is a bar graph.

And I also think, that 700 points is a 70 percents. So maximum is a 1000 points.

      IMHO:
this exam is test only your knowledge of technology.
After passing this exam, I had been faced to the problems in implementation of this technology in the pre-productiver environment, which will never be covered by MVA courses, and even offiial off-line preparations. In the the country that I live, is the besto to have experience of implementation, than to have a cert. But everything changes right now.
You have to improove your skils in the each time slot.

True. That’s why i try to test that solutions on my homelab. At least i’m trying to install it, play with it.
That way i’ve implemented server 2012 in my company 🙂

As far as I know you won’t get a paper certificate by default. But to be sure, take a look at the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) site.

    Hi,

Thanks for the links and its helping a lot for sure. BTW I’ve cleared the exam on 17th of May 2014. Thanks for the help. But now I am curious about the certificate? I asked the examiner and he said Microsoft doesn’t allocate a Final/Hard copy of the certificate for free. You will have to apply for that online by paying the fees online. Could you kindly let me know how should I get that hard copy certificate?
    Thanks in advance.

Congrats on passing. I think you can order it through the MCP site … but personally I don’t see the added value. You can also use transcript sharing as “proof”?
