Comics – Offer : access to over 15.000 digital Marvel comics for a month for only $0.99

marveluniverse

Introduction

Since I was a kid I enjoyed reading all sorts of comics. These were mainly marvel based ones like Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man, The Punisher. Since my childhood I haven’t read many comic books anymore. This is probably also because here in the Netherlands, Marvel comic books aren’t very common in shops. While I do still enjoy watching comic book based movies, I didn’t really think about reading comic books again (Naruto is an exception).

Marvel Unlimited one month for $0.99

This was until I saw the Marvel Unlimited offer where you can get a month of access to over 15.000 digital Marvel comics for only $0.99 for one month.
You can find the offer here: http://marvel.com/mu which contains the promo code SDCC14

Notes on the offer:
1) $0.99 offer ends 11:59 EST July 29th (05:00 CET July 30th)
2) It requires a credit card
3) The regular price (after the first month) is $9.99 monthly or $69.00 yearly.
4) The subscription auto renews, unless you cancel it. You can cancel it immediately after you sign up, so you won’t forget.

Notes on the Marvel Unlimited subscription

1) There are apps available for Android and iOS, but not for Windows tablets (the web based comic reader works fine though).
2) The newest comics aren’t made available immediately to Marvel Unlimited subscribers. It generally takes about half a year before they become available.
3) Not all comics are available for Marvel Unlimited subscribers yet. So before starting to read a series, make sure all the issues are available.

My experience and closing thoughts

I took advantage of this offer and started reading up on my favorite comics. I still have a lot of great comics to read from characters I know, but I’m also very curious about comics from characters that are less known to me. By example I don’t know much about The Guardians Of The Galaxy and plan and want to know more about them before seeing the movie. As such, I think I will be taking a monthly subscription now and then to read some comics, but only when I have time to read multiple comics.

So if you’re interested be sure to take advantage of this great offer and take a look to see if it is something for you. Also if you’re in Europe you’ll benefit from the strong EURO if you would decide to subscribe later on. A yearly subscription costs $69, which is about 50 EUROS. Not a bad deal if you ask me 🙂

If you have suggestions on which comics are must reads, please leave a comment.

Games – Only 12 hours left on the Humble Origin Bundle – give to charity and get great games

A new Humble Bundle, the Humble Origin Bundle has been available for a while and will be over in 12 hours. don’t miss out on the great games.

This is a way to give to charity and get great games (or the other way around). Basically you can determine how much you give and you can even specify who should receive which amount of your donation. You can read more about the concept and other bundles in a previous blog post.

It’s also good to note that ALL proceedings will be going to charity. Even though Electronic Arts (EA) has been criticized a lot in the past, this is a great thing they’re doing.

The Humble Origin Bundle

The Humble Origin Bundle contains the following steam redeemable games:

  • Dead Space
  • Crysis 2 Maximum Edition
  • Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
  • Medal of Honor
  • Mirror’s Edge
  • The Sims 3 (along with two expansion packs in The Sims 3 Starter Pack)
  • Battlefield 3
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Uprising
  • Populous

To give you an idea what these games look like, take a look at this YouTube video:

Make sure to visit the website and don’t wait too long:

Games – My Portal 2 map

Ever since Half-Life on the PC came out in 1998 I’ve been a big fan of the Valve franchises Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left4Dead, Portal, Team Fortress and DOTA.

In my opinion, Valve is also the best game company in the world. I feel this way because:

  1. They created a lot of great game franchises and keep actively supporting it for a long time.
  2. They created the best PC gaming platform Steam and are continuously improving it.
  3. They provide the community with free tools that can be used to easily create, share and find user generated content like maps, mods and other content. Because of this you can keep playing your already existing games with new content. There is also a lot of user generated content because these users get a large share of the money earned from it.
  4. The Free-To-Play (F2P) games Team Fortress 2 and DOTA are done properly, they aren’t pay-to-win (P2W).

So when Valve released the level editor for Portal 2 about a year ago, I couldn’t wait to create my own level. Even though the level editor is really straightforward and simple, it took me quite a while to create the level (mainly to test and prevent players from taking unintended shortcuts).

To map I created is called “TAG recruits survival test” and is a tribute to my old Half-Life Deathmatch clan called The Assassins Guild (TAG). To give you an idea of the map I uploaded a quick tour video to YouTube:
The map can be downloaded from steam: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=72096196.If you’ve played my map, please leave a comment.

I really liked making the map, but because it takes a lot of time I don’t know if and when I’ll make a new map. Luckily many other people have been creating content and at the time of writing 263,886 maps have already been created. My friend Bart Fuchs also made a map you might want to check out called: cubed laser.

PowerShell – Reverse strings and reverse file names

With PowerShell it is relatively easy to reverse a string:
$str = “gnirtsdesrever”
$str[-1..-($str.length)] -join “”

Some of you might ask: Why would anyone want to do this ? Well, since the start of the year Usenet DMCA takedowns have begun to occur automatically, very quickly and very often. This means many movies and TV series on Usenet / News Groups are being taken offline very quickly.

Counter measures to prevent takedowns by uploaders include:

  • The use of encrypted links to NZB files.
  • The use file names that make it harder to find copyrighted files.

As you can probably guess, some just reverse the file names. The PowerShell script I’ve created will automate reversing the file names for files in the specified folder that match the specified file name filter.

I hope it is useful for you as well.

PS: Someone else on usenet had the same idea as me and created a VBS that will add a right-click menu option to explorer. I’ve added this in the same location as my PowerShell script as well.

Games – Pinball FX 2 available on steam with 1 pinball table for free

Ever since I’ve been young I enjoyed playing pinball, both physical ones and virtual ones on PC and consoles.

One of the in my opinion better pinball games is Pinball FX (2) / Zen Pinball (2). At first these games were only available on consoles. Afterwards they also became available for Mac, smartphones and tablets. And with the release of Windows 8 it was also for PC/Windows tablet through the Windows 8 store. Now it is also available for PC gamers without Windows 8 through Steam with the free table called Sorcerer’s Lair:

Additional tables cost about 3 euros from the Dutch Steam store, but prices may vary depending on where you’re from and which platform you’re using.

I personally prefer Pinball FX2 on steam instead over the Windows 8 store version because:

  • Steam is less platform dependent. For games you bought on steam if they have versions for Mac, Linux, Windows you’ll often be able to play it on these platforms without having to buy it again. Also the Windows store is relatively new, so it is unsure how long it will be supported.
  • Steam often has sales which might allow buying additional tables cheaper.
  • I already have a lot of games on steam, so it is easier to have all my games in one library.
  • With steam it is easier to play your games on other systems. You only have to install steam, logon with your own account and download the game.

Even though Pinball FX is a great game, there are still some things I’d like to see improved:

  • Currently you have to buy the pinball table over and over again for each platform you want to play on.
  • Being able to play all tables on all platforms. Now some tables are simply not available on some platforms.
  • Being able to have a consolidated view of friends and their high scores independent of the platform.
  • Have achievements be applied on all platforms you use. By example Xbox Live achievements, PS3 trophies and Steam achievements.

I hope you enjoy the game. If you’re interested to see a compilation of available pinball tables on all platforms, take a look at this video:
